It took 3 years before Matthew made his 1st successful walk unassisted. Since then, Matthew has been in countless PT provided by outside professional as well as what’s provided at school. Although he is mobile, ataxia is still a constant struggle. Whether it is a stair or a hill, climbing is a skill he hasn’t mastered.
During this trip, although Matthew has mobility limitations, we continued to push him to his potential. We let him climbed hills, rocky paths, and areas he is very uncomfortable. This child has never been deprived of experiencing many “a neuro-typical-child-excursion”. Some activities were a success, some are meant for one-time experience only. Since Matt was born, Mike and I have never done a couple’s excursion without him in the mix. He has always been our happy 3rd wheeler.
Today, we three, attempted to push our potentials. Mike is very outdoorsy kind of an individual and he surprised us with a day of ATV rental so we can explore the trails and terrains that can’t be reached by regular vehicles. We had a blast overall but when Dad explored trails that were rough, both Matt and I didn’t want any part of it. When the ATV climbed a terrain full of rocks over looking a slope, and the ATV is swerving as though we are going to drop to our deaths, I feel like I am having an “out-of-body experience”, and the little guy holds both of our arms like his life depended on it. While some trails were more in my league, Matt wanted a combination of smooth yet with a little spike of fun. If this would be hubby’s solo expedition, I would end up in an emergency excursion. We truly had a blast … a lifetime of memories were made.
